On Being Brought From Africa To America - Phillis Wheatley

In this poem, Phillis Wheatley talks about her change from being in Africa to America - becoming a slave. It seems as if she is positive about this slavery because it introduced her to Chrisitanity. This Christian faith and practice was important to her and her life, bringing light to her life during her enslavement.

Throughout the poem, she seems to down play the slavery - the violence, the kidnapping the slaves including the children, and hte trip on the slave ship from Africa to America. Christianity provided a reason for all of this. There is some higher, more powerful force than humans - God - who acted directly in her life and the path her life has taken. She states how the slaves can be saved as well and Christianity can help with that.

Her faith in Chrisitanity made her enslavement more bareable it seems. It provided her with reasons, beliefs, light on the diffiult life she was faced with. She seems to focus on the positives which makes life a little easier and not as hard.
