The Tree - Anne Finch

Anne Finch is another woman writer who expresses her opinions of various categories in her writings. However, she is not aggressive as other writers have been. In her poem, “The Tree”, Anne Finch shows her character through the tree.

She uses the tree as a symbol of protection of the people. The tree protects and cares for the people by shading them from the sun. It does it just to do it; it’s its job, no questions asked, not receiving anything in return for its work. The only way you can protect the tree is to watch out for it, making sure it does not get hurt by anyone else (cut down with an axe). This is the exact same way people should treat one another Finch believes. There is always that one person that watches out for everyone for nothing in return – they are just being a good friend or person. Sometimes this goes un- noticed or acknowledged. However, this person also needs to be protected and watched over as well which shows that they are recognized and cared for as well. People do not realize what they have until it is gone, whether it is shade from a tree, a caring friend who is always there for them, etc. and Finch wants to bring that to the readers’ eyes.

Maybe Finch felt this way and was writing about herself, comparing herself to the tree.
