The Infinites Of Matter - Margaret Cavendish

Margaret Cavendish was writing during the Enlightment. During this time, the world and peoples ideas and beliefs were changing. This is seen in this poem as she talks about and uses words relating to science, like infinites and matter.

With all of the new knowledge and ideas, she became curious, wondering what else is out there. She wants to know what is out there beyond our world. She believed that there has to be more out there that is greater than the world she lives in. However there are limits tto our world as they would learn, but they also learned that the earth is "like a Ball in compasse is made round".

Although our world has limits, she questions how this is possible: "And if that Matter, with which the World's made, Be infinite, then more Worlds may be said." If matter is infinite then why isn't there a greater world out there?

With all of the new ideas and knowledge being discovered and quetioned, Cavendish uses them in her writings, questioning and exploring them. She wants answers, wanting to learn and explore these new ideas.
